Paltan Bazaar is Dehradun’s oldest and busiest market, and the first stop for most families before Diwali. You will find everything from clothing and kitchenware to decorative lights and puja items on one long stretch. The lanes get very crowded in Dhanteras week, so go in the morning if you can.

3. Moti Bazaar and Jhanda Bazaar

  • Best for: Sarees, suit fabric, dress material and traditional wear

4. Dhamawala and Dispensary Road: Jewellery for Dhanteras

  • Best for: Gold and silver coins, Lakshmi-Ganesh idols, silver utensils and jewellery
  • Why go: Dehradun’s traditional jewellery hub, with long-established family jewellers

On Dhanteras (November 6), these streets are at their busiest. Order coins or pick up pre-booked jewellery a few days early.

5. Pottery Market, Khurbura Mohalla: Handmade Diyas

  • Best for: Clay diyas, kulhads, pots, lamps and terracotta decor
  • Why go: Buy directly from potters at good prices, and support local artisans this Diwali

6. Tibetan Market and Indira Market (near Parade Ground)

  • Best for: Budget clothes, woollens, jackets, bags and accessories
  • Why go: Hundreds of small shops with low prices, ideal for winter wear ahead of the cold months

7. Rajpur Road: Branded Stores and Sweet Shops

  • Best for: Branded fashion showrooms, electronics, premium sweets and gift hampers
  • Why go: A cleaner, less chaotic option than the old markets, with plenty of cafes for a break. See our Rajpur Road cafes guide.

Diwali Melas and Exhibitions in Dehradun 2026

As of October 18, no large public Diwali mela dates have been officially announced for Dehradun. In past years, festive exhibitions and handicraft fairs have been held at Parade Ground, Rangers Ground and banquet venues on Rajpur Road in the weeks before Diwali.

We will add confirmed Diwali melas, Swadeshi fairs and exhibitions here as soon as dates are announced. If you are organising one, contact Dehradun Insider to get it listed.

Where to Buy Firecrackers in Dehradun 2026

The Dehradun district administration has issued guidelines for firecracker sales ahead of Diwali 2026:

  • Designated sale sites identified in the municipal area include Rangers Ground, the area near Hindu National Inter College at 26 Park Road, and the old bus stand. More sites can be approved by the City Magistrate, SDMs and police officers.
  • A temporary licence is mandatory for every firecracker seller.
  • No firecracker shops on public roads or in crowded markets. Last year this covered Paltan Bazaar, Dhamawala, Moti Bazaar, Hanuman Chowk, Jhanda Mohalla, Ramlila Bazaar, Band Bazaar, Anand Chowk to Laxman Chowk, Dispensary Road, Clock Tower to Hanuman Mandir on Chakrata Road, and Karanpur main market. Confirm the 2026 list with the latest administration order.
  • Silence zones of up to 100 metres around hospitals, educational institutions and courts must follow noise rules.

Buy only from licensed stalls at approved sites.

Dhanteras Shopping Guide (November 6)

Dhanteras is the most auspicious day of the season for buying metal. Here is what Dehradun families usually buy, and how to shop smart:

  • Gold and silver coins: the most popular Dhanteras buy. Check for the BIS hallmark and HUID number on gold, and always take a proper bill.
  • Lakshmi-Ganesh idols and silver items: silver coins, glasses and spoons are popular gifts.
  • Steel and brass utensils: buying a new utensil on Dhanteras is a common tradition.
  • Brooms: many households buy a new broom on Dhanteras for good luck.
  • Electronics and vehicles: showrooms on Rajpur Road and Haridwar Road usually run festive finance offers. Book test drives and deliveries in advance.

Tip: Gold rates change daily. Compare the day’s rate at two or three jewellers before buying, and pre-book coins to skip the evening rush.

Smart Tips for Diwali Shopping in Dehradun

  • Go early in the day. Paltan Bazaar and Hanuman Chowk are far less crowded before noon.
  • Avoid driving into the old markets. During festivals, Dehradun Police often declare zero zones and restrict vehicles around Paltan Bazaar. Park at the edge and walk, or take an e-rickshaw.
  • Carry cash and UPI. Small shops prefer UPI or cash; keep some change for diya and flower sellers.
  • Bargain politely at street stalls, but not at fixed-price showrooms.
  • Shop local. Buy clay diyas from Khurbura potters and handmade gifts from local artisans. Uttarakhand’s own Aipan art decor makes a great Diwali gift.
  • Download the Pacific Malls app if you are shopping at Pacific Mall or Mall of Dehradun, to collect festival reward points.
  • Watch out for pickpockets in crowded lanes during Dhanteras week.
